Therapy for Moms of Children with Chronic Illness, Allergies, or Mental Health Needs

When your child has a chronic illness, severe allergy, or mental health condition, your nervous system rarely gets a break.

You may be:

  • Constantly scanning for danger

  • Struggling to relax, even when there is no identified crisis

  • Managing medical appointments, emergencies, or uncertainty

  • Feeling isolated or misunderstood

  • Carrying a level of responsibility that others don’t see

This kind of stress is real—and it deserves support.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it normal to feel constantly on edge when my child has severe allergies or a chronic illness?
Yes. Many moms experience ongoing vigilance, anxiety, and fear when managing a child's medical condition.  As a mom, it feels like feeding your children is such a primary part of your “job”, of course having a child with serious allergies is going to be stressful!

Why do I feel exhausted even when my child's condition is stable?
Living with uncertainty and responsibility can keep the nervous system activated even during periods of relative calm.  So, when you have a moment to breathe between crises, your nervous system won’t let you relax.  This is what Dr. Tera is truly an expert in helping people with.

Can therapy help if my fears about my child's health are realistic?
Absolutely. Therapy is not about convincing you that risks don't exist. It is about helping you manage stress, uncertainty, and emotional burden so it doesn’t feel like you are on the edge of losing your mind constantly.

What is caregiver burnout?
Caregiver burnout refers to emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that can develop when caring for someone with ongoing needs.

How do I support my child without becoming consumed by worry?
Therapy can help you find a balance between staying appropriately vigilant and maintaining your own well-being.  Some days it’s a tightrope, and Dr. Tera has your back.

Can having a child with severe allergies increase anxiety?
Yes. Parents of children with life-threatening allergies often experience chronic vigilance, uncertainty, and elevated anxiety.
